I recently had a dream that I was dead. It was weird because I didn’t realize I was dead until someone told me.
I was dead in a “Sixth Sense” kind of way. Some guy eventually broke the news, “You’re dead, bro.”
I was simply going through the motions, thinking I was alive when I was actually dead.
I woke up pissed off.
It made me reflect on what I’ve been doing recently.
As someone who’s building a business, I always feel like I can be giving and doing more.
I wondered: Am I living fully? Am I giving it my all? Or, am I just going through the motions?
I was shaken up, in a good way.
Thinking About Death Can Improve Your Life
There are real benefits to thinking about death. But, for some reason, death continues to be a taboo issue in our society.
It’s like everyone expects to live forever.
A friend of mine used to say, “It doesn’t really matter what you do in life because you’re gonna die.”
He’s right, in a sense. We all die.
We can use this reality to improve our lives.
Three Ways Thinking About Death Can Improve Your Life
1.You Get Inspired
Thinking about death is inspiring.
You have one life. This is it.
What do you want your life to mean? What do you want your death to mean?
Do you want to leave a legacy? If so, does your current lifestyle align with that vision?
2. Your Concept Of Time Changes (For The Better)
When you embrace death, you start to think about time differently.
Time is our greatest asset. It’s the one thing we can never get back.
Do you really want to sit in a cubicle for ten years working a job you hate?
Are you working on your dream or spending time building someone else’s dream?
Thinking about death helps you make better decisions about how to use your time.
3. You Free Yourself From Fear And The Good Opinions Of Others
Death frees us from the dreams others have for us.
Afraid to go out on your own and build that business? Worried what your parents think about your life decisions?
Who cares? It’s your life.
People on deathbeds talk about regrets and the dreams they let go.
Embracing death helps you kill fear and embrace possibility.
Thinking about death helps you self-actualize.
Momento Mori is a Latin term meaning “remember death.” I wear a skull bracelet to remind me of my death, daily.
Thinking about death is a healthy and empowering way of living.
It will inspire you, help you make better decisions, and allow you to kick fear in the teeth.
Momento Mori. Everyday.
